Opening
to the Infinite

A 12-Month Journey into
the Miracle of Awakened Awareness

CraigJeff

with Craig Hamilton and Jeff Carreira

Dear Friend,

We couldn’t be more excited to offer you this invitation to join a yearlong experiment in awakened awareness.

This program has grown out of our mutual commitment to support as many people as possible to stabilize their awakening and in so doing create a more Enlightened world.

In the Opening to the Infinite program you will explore four essential elements that allow you to maintain contact with the subtle consciousness that many of us taste, but find much harder to live in.

On this page you will find details of a program that offers monthly opportunities to come together in the miracle of illuminated heart and mind.

…but that is really just the beginning.

Life happens beyond the hours of courses, programs and retreats and we want to support you to build a spiritual life that will optimally serve your growth.

We’ve consciously kept the cost and time demands of this program reasonable because we want you to be able to participate with the flexibility that allows you to pursue other interests and other sources of wisdom. You can think of the Opening to the Infinite program as a framework that can be customized and expanded upon.

We intend to gather a group of intrepid explorers and step out together beyond the edge of the known and into a dance with the wellspring of insight that awaits us there. From that vantage point we will look back at the world as it is, re-envision it as it could be, and explore ways of being that can bring that vision to life.

You will be joining a living sangha (spiritual collective) that is nurtured through monthly gatherings and online forums. This is not primarily a course or curriculum. It is an experiment in conscious evolution.

And we will not be leading it from outside. We will be in the experiment with you, moving beyond our own comfort zones into new terrain and sharing our discoveries with you as you share yours with us.

If you feel called to join us for this adventure in consciousness, we look forward to being with you on the journey.

With Love,

Jeff Carreira & Craig Hamilton

BEYOND BREAKTHROUGH:
how awakening can be sustained

Many of us have experienced moments of awakening. Whether brought on by spontaneous grace or intensive spiritual practice, these episodes of expanded consciousness reveal to us a mystery beyond our mind’s ability to comprehend. They show us who we are beyond the narrow confines of our separate and isolated sense of self. They awaken us to a glorious potential–an uncontainable freedom that is always right here.

These breakthrough episodes of awakening are tremendously valuable because they reveal our potential for living an enlightened life. Our experiences of boundless freedom show us our own true nature. They leave us with a life altering awareness that a completely different kind of life is possible.

But no matter how many times we break through into awakened awareness, most of us find that our access to this deeper possibility fades quickly leaving us longing to find it again.

The elusive Holy Grail that we are all striving for is the possibility of sustaining our access to awakening. We don’t want to be awake only periodically; we want to be awake consistently.

But how do we sustain our awakening?

Some believe that they simply need a single awakening experience big enough to last forever. As long time deep practitioners, we can say with certainty that although this has happened to some, it is exceedingly rare – and it is not the only way.

Others believe that a dedicated daily practice will anchor them in higher consciousness. Again, our experience tells us that regular practice, although essential, is not enough.

Still others imagine that there is some insight or understanding that they are missing and if they find it everything will be different. And while insight and understanding are crucial aspects of awakening, on their own they will not hold our attention in the subtle realms of illumination that we discover in deep practice.

So, how do we generate an awakening and sustain it over time?

Four Keys to Sustained Awakening

As two independent spiritual teachers, we have been meeting regularly for the past few years to explore how we could better serve those who come to us for guidance – especially when it comes to sustaining an awakening.

Through our ongoing discussions, and our work with thousands of students, we’ve gradually come to identify four key dimensions of spiritual life that we feel most powerfully support the stabilization of awakened awareness.

1. Practicing the Inner Postures of Awakened Awareness

To awaken in a profound way we must develop the capacity to practice and abide in the inner postures of awakened mind. These inner postures put us in direct contact with the miraculous inherent freedom of our true being. Our ability to adopt these inner postures and orientations is essential to sustaining awakened awareness.

2. Cultivating the Pillars of Profound Spiritual Practice

In an ideal world the practice of the inner postures would be enough, but we don’t live in an ideal world. We live in a world that has left all of us with unconscious habits of fear and constraint that keep us from recognizing the inner freedom that is inherent within us. Only by identifying these habits and countering them with the attitudes and aptitudes that supercharge our practice does our practice gain truly transformative power. In this program these attitudes and aptitudes are cultivated as The Pillars of Profound Spiritual Practice.

3. Activating Awakened Awareness Within Us

The practice of the postures and pillars that we have identified is subtle and our progress is dramatically enhanced when we have the recognition of awakening repeatedly activated in our awareness. This can happen in many ways, but traditionally doing spiritual work with someone who has greater access to this delicate consciousness is a time-honored means of infusing our own consciousness with the same recognition.

4. Spending time in Deep Spiritual Immersion

Once awakening has been activated in our own hearts and minds the only thing remaining on our path is having time for deep immersion in the experience of awakening. The reason retreats are so important for us is not because they introduce us to new possibilities, but because they afford us the time to become deeply rooted in those immaculate spaces of opening.

We’ve designed our Opening to the Infinite program around these four core elements. Our goal is to create a powerful container for you immerse for extended periods of time in practicing inner postures that connect you to awakening supported by pillars of strength and energized by Spiritual Activation.

Over the course of this year you will not only connect with the miracle of awakened consciousness you will sustain that connection and open ever more deeply into the mysteries of spiritual freedom. In the sections below we will describe in more detail each of these powerful elements

Practicing the Inner Postures of Awakened Consciousness

If you’re reading this page, you’re probably already convinced of the value of daily spiritual practices like meditation, chanting, prayer or sacred movement. But consider this question for a moment: when you are doing your spiritual practices, are you practicing in order to get somewhere other than where you are right now, to reach a special state of consciousness or awakening in the future?

We’re asking you this because we’ve observed that nearly every spiritual practitioner we meet has been taught to see daily spiritual practice as something designed to bring us closer to a desired future state.

This makes sense because we come from a culture in which we’ve been taught that to excel in anything we need to do practices and exercises to develop the advanced skills needed for peak performance. The aspiring musician practices scales to develop speed and fluency with his instrument. The winning athlete puts in long hours in the gym building muscle to boost her performance on the field.

And, while this way of thinking about spiritual practice holds some truth in it, it also tends to obscure a deeper and more radical understanding of the potential inherent in practices of awakening.

Because awakening is the discovery of our essential nature – of who we already are – it is not something that can ever happen in the future. So any practice approach that is seen as a process occurring in time, although it may confer genuine benefits, also inherently creates a barrier to the recognition of the uncontainable freedom that is already our own nature.

During our year-long journey together, we’ll explore a very different way of approaching spiritual practice than you may have encountered previously.

In each of our virtual Awakening Retreats, we will be teaching, reinforcing and reactivating eight key “inner postures” of awakened consciousness. These inner postures are not techniques designed to bring about a future moment of awakening. They are practices of Enlightenment itself. They are postures of mind and heart that, when wholeheartedly engaged with, immediately enable the natural and uncontainable freedom of our own true nature to reveal itself without obstruction.

Only the mind of enlightenment can actually practice these postures. So when you practice them, you are inherently stepping directly into a liberated relationship to your experience.

When you practice the core inner postures of awakening, you are stepping directly out of the momentum of unconsciousness and ignorance, and in doing so making space for the mystery of your own true nature to reveal itself.

The Eight Inner Postures
of Awakened Consciousness:

Innocence:
The Courage to Expand Beyond the Known

Equanimity:
The Clarity to Remain Unmoved by Illusion

Presence:
The Strength to Remain Completely Open to the Moment

Immediacy:
The Audacity to Let Go of the Future

Inclusivity:
The Heart to Embrace the Totality of Existence

Receptivity:
The Vulnerability to be Moved by the Unimaginable

Surrender:
The Humility to Give Up Control

Limitlessness:
The Willingness to Abandon All Reference Points

Cultivating the Pillars of Profound Spiritual Practice

As we’ve already stated, the journey to awakening is a journey to who we already are. That’s why we teach people how to directly adopt the inner postures that represent the reality of their true being.

We have also found that In order for your spiritual practice to have truly transformative power it must be infused with certain attitudes and capacities that ensure that your practice is fully energetic, optimally focused, and deeply sensitive. That is why this year we are introducing new teachings on Six Pillars of Profound Practice.

The bold position that we take as teachers is that we don’t need to practice to become awake or free, because awake and free is what we already are. What we do need practice for is to support us to remember who we already are through all of life’s inevitable turns. We were raised in a culture that has conditioned us to think of ourselves as limited and deficient when in fact we are boundless and complete.

When we have a breakthrough experience of awakening we find ourselves in a state of consciousness that is wide, open and free.

We are free of the need to be anything other than what we already are, or be anywhere besides where we are right now. The existential quest for fulfillment comes to a magnificent fruition in the recognition that there was never anything missing.

In the midst of these miraculous experiences of spiritual liberation we know without doubt that this is who we really always are no matter how it might sometimes feel. But when those experiences fade we usually fall back into the belief that there is something wrong.

What is difficult on the spiritual path is not becoming awake, because that is what we already are anyway. The real challenge is knowing that we are awake so deeply that we don’t forget it during life’s inevitable challenges.

Yes, when we practice the inner postures described above we will have breakthrough experiences into our true nature. But these are not the most important benefit of spiritual practice. As miraculous as these are, they pale in comparison to the possibility that your consciousness can remain open and free always – even in the midst of unpleasant and challenging circumstances. This is true freedom and it is the possibility this program is offering.

The greatest benefit of spiritual practice is building a momentum toward inner freedom. In this program you will learn how to engage with spiritual practice in a way that will break your habits of assumed limitation and deficiency.

By infusing your practice with the Six Pillars of Profound Practice you will learn to rest in the fullness of your being steadily and intensely. By spending time in this level of practice you will become increasingly familiar with the inherent freedom of your true self until you stop forgetting who you really are.

A single breakthrough experience, no matter how big, is not necessarily going to do this. For most of us creating a heavy center of gravity in our true self requires deep and profound practice over time.

Initially we find practice difficult. Our habits of limitation are so strong that we constantly slip back into them, but over time, if our practice is strong, the experience of awakened awareness feels less and less like something we attain and more and more like something we return to. When this happens we have begun to shift our identity from limitation to wholeness.

In the Opening to the Infinite program you will develop a practice strong enough to shift your identity from limitation to wholeness. And the Six Pillars of Profound Spiritual Practice are what makes that possible.

Each of these pillars is a characteristic of truly transformative practice. In order to supercharge your practice you must engage with them until they become the habitual foundation of your practice.

In each of our Awakening Retreats and in our weekly study guides we will emphasize these pillars so that they infuse your practice with the power to transform.

The Six Pillars of
Profound Spiritual Practice:

Intention:
Setting Your Sights on the Radical Possibility of True Freedom

Humility:
Surrendering to the Delicate Intuitions of Spirit

Audacity:
Aspiring for Unimaginable Possibilities

Commitment:
Anchoring Your Heart and Mind in the Infinite

Vulnerability:
Remaining Wide Open to the Possibility of Awakening

Faith:
Finding the Confidence to Leap Far Beyond What the Mind can Know

    Activating Awakened Awareness

Activation is something most of us have experienced at some point on our path. It happens when we allow ourselves to come under the influence of someone who has more access to the infinite reality of True Being than we do. When such a person also has the mysterious ability to activate our own innate awakened awareness they can reveal deeper dimensions of our own True Self to us.

In the great wisdom traditions, this activation was often referred to as “transmission” or “initiation” and it has always been considered an essential component of any path to awakening.

Although many of us have experienced our enlightened nature being activated by a more awakened human being, what we may not realize is that to truly become grounded in enlightened consciousness, most of us need regular “reactivation” until our own true nature becomes so apparent to us that we no longer lose touch with it in the midst of the challenges of daily life. For some of us, this reactivation needs to occur repeatedly over several years. For others, it may require decades to achieve stability.

This is why, in the great traditions of the past, the earnest disciple would often decide to leave the world behind to live in a monastery or ashram in the company of a spiritual master. This gave them the precious opportunity for the repeated activation that is so crucial to sustain an embodied awakening.

Activation continuously awakens our heart, mind and soul. And this, especially when coupled with regular meditation rooted in the Pillars of Profound Spiritual Practice, gives us the courage and strength to deeply embrace reality as it is and transcend our unconscious habits of existential struggle and resistance.

In the light of activation we realize, again and again, that we are already awake. We were awake before we were born, and we will continue to be awake after we die. Suddenly our energy and attention are liberated into a mystery beyond comprehension.

When we stop struggling with the way things are our consciousness soars into uncontainable freedom.

Most of us know deep down that we benefit in tangible and life-changing ways from spiritual activation. But, unfortunately, our culture’s emphasis on independence and individualism often leads us to minimize the very real interdependencies that exist, including our potential to be positively and unalterably influenced by another human being.

Additionally, in modern life, most of us have few opportunities for the profound and regular reactivation we truly need to stabilize our awakening.

The monthly retreats in this program give you the opportunity to experience the repeated reactivation that you need to live a life of freedom and illumination. Craig and Jeff have both done decades of intensive spiritual practice that has given them each a solid grounding in the mystery of being.

Activation will occur during these events in two distinct but interrelated ways.

The first is through precise instruction and guidance leading you directly into an experience of awakened mind. By carefully directing your practice and responding to your questions, Jeff and Craig will guide your attention past false assumptions, limiting beliefs and unconscious habits into the subtle and direct recognition of your own true nature.

The second way activation will take place in this program is through a mysterious transmission of deep inner faith and conviction in the reality of our true nature. This subtle transmission of the truth of wholeness can occur in dialogue and in silence, but however it occurs, it is always unmistakable in its illuminating power and immediacy.

The activation that will occur on these retreats will not be limited to what Craig and Jeff bring into the field, but will include contributions from each of us. Many of the participants on this program will bring decades of spiritual practice and experience with them and together we will create a powerful activating field of awakened awareness.

Spending Time in
Deep Spiritual Immersion

Whether we realize it or not, most of us are sorely lacking in opportunities to immerse ourselves in the depths of our own awakened awareness.

Although many of us have managed to integrate regular spiritual practice and study into our daily lives, it’s rare that we take time out of the swirl of modern life to completely let go and dive deep into our true nature for an extended period of time.

Simply put, we don’t spend anywhere near enough time on retreat.

It’s ironic because most of us know by now from our own experience that when we do take time out for retreat, we have profound experiences of awakening that become anchors for our practice and catalysts for transformation. But in spite of this, we all live such busy lives that we rarely take extended time out for these deep dives that are so essential to living an Enlightened Life.

We convince ourselves that doing daily practice and study will be enough to deepen our awakening. But deep down most of us know that something happens on retreat that is very hard to replicate in an hour of meditation a day.

When we take time out to rest for an extended period in the truth of our being something uniquely potent happens – we actually begin to forget who we thought we were.

A few minutes or an hour of daily practice is simply not enough to initiate the mysterious process of self-forgetting. In our daily practice it is rare for most of us to forget our ‘self’. It is much more likely that we will sit in meditation with our separate sense of identity intact. This is valuable practice, but it is seldom miraculous.

When we have the time for deeper immersion, we have a rare opportunity to leave our identity behind. In this depth of immersion there is no longer a sense of someone meditating. This is when something completely unimaginable happens – we merge with the consciousness that exists prior to any sense of separation. This is non-dual awakening.

Only when our practice becomes this deep do we recognize who we truly are as the singular source of consciousness from which the universe emerges.

Each of the monthly online Awakening Retreats will give you an in-depth immersion in awakened awareness. For each of these immersion experiences, we will strongly encourage you to leave behind every worldly concern and give yourself entirely to your own process of awakening. Through a carefully orchestrated combination of instruction, guided practice, dialogue and silence, we will explore the deep and subtle contours of awakened consciousness as it reveals itself in our own moment by moment experience.

THE THEMES FOR OUR HALF-DAY WORKSHOPS

In the Opening to the Infinite Program you will cultivate the Pillars of Profound Spiritual Practice in six half day workshops. The theme of each of workshop is described here.

    1. Intention: Clearing the Inhibiting Influence of Unconscious Drives

Our culture has trained us to associate intention with willpower. If we are not achieving our desired goals we are told to “try harder.” This may work well with the material goals of life, but it is exactly the opposite direction we need to pursue when in our intention to find spiritual freedom. On the path of awakening we find that trying harder brings more of the tension and fear that we wanted to be free from in the first place. Your intention to be free will not be supported by willpower. The only thing that enhance our spiritual intentions is clarity. If we are not finding our spiritual desires fulfilled it is may not be because we are not making enough enough. Our lack of fulfillment is more likely caused by unconscious intentions to remain safe and secure that are countering our spiritual intention to be free. Illuminating the unconscious motives and desires allows us to liberates our desire for freedom and clears the path to spiritual fulfillment.

    2. Consistency: Generating Unwavering Power, Strength and Conviction

We live in a fickle age in which we are too often conditioned to pursue immediate gratification over longer term happiness and fulfillment. Awakened Consciousness is not a state of perpetual satisfaction. It is a perpetual embrace of reality as it is. If we have not developed our capacity for consistency we will tend to give up when we are challenged by the inevitable difficulties of spiritual pursuit. This doesn’t have to mean leaving the path all together, much more often it simply means engaging halfheartedly or inconsistency. To become consistent we need to learn to ignore feelings of doubt, fear or boredom that inevitably arise in awareness. We have been trained to stop in the face of these and other negative emotions. Most often we are only able to authentically return to the task at hand once these feelings have subsided. To find freedom in this life must train ourselves to resist the temptation to become distracted in this way. When you are able to maintain your focus through all inhibiting states of mind your practice will become an unending source of freedom and inspiration.

    3. Audacity: Reaching for Unimaginable Possibilities

We all suffer from some degree or another from an irrational fear of failure. We have been raised in a culture that is obsessed with winning and scorns losing. Without realizing it many of us have developed unconscious habits of avoiding aspirations if success is not assured. In our spiritual life these usually means that we reduce the highest possibilities of spiritual fulfillment to what feel like more reasonable goals. Instead of aiming for the full potential of our deepest realizations our spiritual desires begin to revolve around concerns of being happier in our day to day life. What originally fueled our desire for freedom was an audacious vision of what was truly possible for ourselves and for human life. Along the way the fires of our initial idealism often die down without our men realizing it. Unconsciously we may have redefined our spiritual goals and substituted in their place much less bold intentions. To aspired for miraculous and seemingly unattainable heights we must find a profound source of courage. Those who find it in themselves to reach for the unimaginable will simultaneously discover that the courage we need can only be found in very same unbridled reach for the miraculous that we find so challenging to embrace.

    4. Humility: Surrendering to the Wisdom and Guidance of Spirit

Most of us have inherited an unquestioned belief in our ability to achieve what we want. The belief that through our own effort we can fulfill our deepest dreams and desires is what drives most of human activity. When we embark on the spiritual path we tend to utilize the same tools of achievement that we have always used. We assume that access to awakened consciousness is something that we can achieve through our own effort and we set out on the path with gusto. We soon find that our normal tools of achievement do not serve us in the subtle realms of spirit. We try harder and harder for a while, but it becomes increasingly apparent that we are not attaining the freedom we were looking for. This often leads us to conclude that we lack some necessary ingredient for success in this endeavor and we sometimes conclude that it as the most humble course of action admit our limitations and shift our aims. In most domains of human endeavor it is humble to respect our limitations, but not in the realm of the pursuit of awakening. At the outset of the path the fire in our heart was ignited by the recognition that awakening is within our reach because it reflects our true nature. Humility in our pursuit of freedom means first of all never denying our inherent capacity to awaken. Then we must give up our normal ways of achieving goals and surrender to a natural process of awakening that will guide us perfectly all the way to freedom as soon as we let it.

    5. Passion: Giving Yourself to the Magnificent Vulnerability of Awakening

Sustaining access to awakened consciousness demands a profound degree of passionate intensity. Most of us on the spiritual path find ourselves caught in the middle of a culturally conditioned paradox. On the one had we long to be swept away by the ind of passionate intensity that intuitively know can carry us to freedom at the same time we have been trained to maintain control of our lives by keeping them circumscribed within predictable boundaries. The sense of limitation has become intolerable and yet we also feel at home in it. The fact is that spiritual liberation and awakened consciousness cannot be held inside of our familiar boundaries. The experience of living vulnerability that is the hallmark of awakening is both exhilarating and frightening. The journey of awakening will always take us beyond the known and the familiar. To make this journey we must allow ourselves to be swept away on the wings of a passion powerful enough to break us free of the gravitational attraction of our habits of constraint. Once liberated in this way we are free to soar out beyond the security of the familiar and the intensity of open-ended possibility begins to become our new home.

    6. Faith: Finding the Confidence to Leap Far Beyond What the Mind can Know

We have been deeply conditioned to acknowledge the reality of only those things that lie comfortably within our current ability to know and understand.. We find it nearly impossible to trust even our own firsthand experience of the spiritual mysteries that lie beyond the mind’s ability to grasp. This is why faith has always been a central pillar in all of the world’s great mystical traditions. Faith is the measure of our capacity to believe in things which can be experienced but never known. Sooner or later any sincere spiritual pursuit will bring us to a place where a leap of faith must be taken. We suddenly find ourselves at the edge of a precipice beyond which we cannot see. We know in our heart that the freedom we seek can only be found by stepping into the blindness. The faith we need in these moments cannot be based on any evidence of the mind. No accumulation of experience or knowledge will spur us forward. Only acts of faith increase our capacity for faith. Those who find themselves ready for this dramatic leap when it appears are those who have learned to trust that which is beyond the mind by consistently taking smaller leaps in their ongoing practice.

The Possibility of
Sustained Awakening . . .

Our goal for this year-long journey is to give you the direct experience of not just glimpsing awakening but sustaining it throughout the year. It has been our experience that when we discover the keys to remaining rooted in awakened consciousness, we begin to undergo a spontaneous and paradigm-altering transformation that opens previously unimagined vistas in consciousness and gives us access to dramatic new potentials for awakened living.

When we learn how to sustain Awakened Consciousness, we begin to . . .

Open to a vast expanse of possibility in which all doubts and imposed limitations disappear, leaving in their place a deep confidence and trust that enables us to act with courage and grace even in the face of previously daunting challenges.

Activate a mysterious source of wisdom that arises spontaneously in response to the needs of the moment, bringing forth laser-like clarity faster than the speed of thought.

Experience an uncontainable freedom from the hypnotic spell of fear and desire, enabling us to meet life’s challenges with an equanimity and steadiness beyond reactivity or compulsion.

Tap into an inner well of creativity that brings forth a seemingly endless flow of unexpected new ideas, visions and integrative solutions from a place beyond the mind..

Awaken to the true purpose of life so that it becomes an unwavering inner “north star” guiding us on a sacred path of ever greater significance and meaningful contribution.

MODULE THEMES

The Opening to the Infinite Program is organized into six modules each of which lasts for two months. In each module you will focus on a unique Awakening in consciousness that will open your experience to a different dimension of Enlightenment. Each module includes one full day and one half day Awakening retreat as well as weekly study guides designed to support you to build on your experience of the retreats..

Module 1:

Awakening to the Mystery of Being:
The Miraculous Power of Letting Things Be As They Are

Our daily lives are an endless stream of activity. We’re almost always doing something, trying to change something, trying to make something happen. This effortful striving may be essential to achieving goals and accomplishing things in our outer lives. But for most of us, doing has become a habit that obscures a more fundamental reality — the essential freedom of Being that is our natural state. In this module, we will move through a series of powerful inner postures and practices to step out of this momentum of habitual doing and directly into the liberating experience of Being itself. By taking the radical step of letting go of the need to do or change anything, we will open the door to an inherent Freedom that is always already here.

Module 2:

Awakening to the Mystery of the Unknowable: The Freedom of Having No Idea

The human mind is one of the great wonders of the universe. Our ability to acquire knowledge and understand our world has given birth to tremendous innovation and enabled the human race to rise up from its primitive origins and create the complex, creative society we find ourselves in today. Yet, for most of us, the very power of our minds has generated a reliance on concepts and an attachment to certainty that stands in the way of our highest potential. When we step onto a path of awakening, we find ourselves called to leap beyond everything we have ever known and embrace a mystery our mind will never be able to comprehend. To live an awakened life, we must be willing to let go of our very need for certainty and become comfortable resting in the insecurity of not knowing. In this module, we will guide you through a series of inner postures and practices to break free from our attachment to knowing and plunge directly into the essential mystery at the heart of reality itself. By giving up any investment in the mind’s power to know, we will discover the primordial innocence of our own true nature, which paradoxically opens the door to an infinite source of wisdom.

Module 3:

Awakening to the Mystery of Awareness: The Discovery of the Infinite Self

Awareness is perhaps the most irreducible and mysterious fact of human existence. In every moment of our waking life, we are aware. We are conscious. Yet, because of our habitual focus on the “content” of awareness — the thoughts, feelings and sensations that arise from moment to moment — most of us live our entire lives without ever becoming aware of awareness itself. At the heart of spiritual awakening is the unexpected and always arresting recognition of awareness itself, prior to everything. When we learn how to shift our attention from its habitual fixation on “objects” to the limitless awareness in which all objects arise, we discover that we have always already been free. We come home to the Source. In this module, we will engage in a series of inner postures and practices designed to reveal Awareness to itself. By becoming aware of awareness and learning how to rest in the natural recognition of awareness itself, you will come face to face with mystery of who you are prior to being aware of anything.

Module 4:

Awakening to the Mystery of Timelessness: The Liberation of Not Waiting for a Better Future

Our True Nature is a glorious, expansive freedom beyond comprehension. This infinite, sacred depth is who and what we already are. It does not need to be cultivated or generated. Nothing we can do could ever take away from it or add to it. Yet, at the core of the human psyche lies a deeply conditioned belief that we are inherently limited and incomplete, that this moment is not enough. This compulsive sense of lack compels us to relentlessly seek outside ourselves for experiences that will make us whole. It also convinces us that true happiness and fullness could only lie in the future. Even when we take up meditation practice, we unconsciously relate to the practice as a technique designed to make us better or prepare us for a future moment of enlightenment which will finally deliver us to the contentment and completeness that we sense is possible. As long as this fundamental assumption remains in control of our seeking, we will never be able to recognize and accept the unimaginable beauty, sacredness and depth that is already our own True Nature in this and every moment. In this module, we will guide you through a set of subtle yet accessible inner postures and practices to step out of this paradigm of postponement and embrace the wholeness and mystery of who and what you already are right now. By giving up any and all investment in a more enlightened future, you will find yourself with no choice but to embrace the fullness and wholeness that has always been the very essence of your own being.

Module 5:

Awakening to the Mystery of Oneness: Beyond the Illusion of Separation

As spiritual seekers, most of us already believe in the idea of oneness. We aspire to embrace a more holistic or unitive paradigm. We long to feel the boundaries of separation fall away. Yet we find ourselves in a world that seems to be made up of separate things. Indeed, the perception of separation and the illusion of duality it gives rise to seem almost inescapable. Even when our own experience is constantly revealing to us a unified, flowing reality, our habit of imposing separation and boundaries overrides the direct knowledge of unity, breaking the whole into parts in an unconscious effort to predict and control the world around us. In this module, we will practice a series of inner postures that will enable you to step out of the habit of imposing separation and directly into the realization of oneness or nonduality. By allowing any sense of separation or boundary to dissolve, you will find yourself released into the profound and liberating recognition that there is no other.

Module 6:

Awakening to the Mystery of Freedom: The Liberating Power of Surrender

Ultimately spiritual awakening is about learning how to let go of control so that a greater power, wisdom and care can begin to move through us, animating our life with its Grace. To allow the profound consciousness that is our True Nature to begin to manifest in our life, we have to get out of the way. This requires us to take the greatest leap we have ever taken — to Trust in something we cannot see and that our mind will never be able to comprehend. In our final module of the year, we will guide you through a series of inner postures and practices to let go of any attempt to control reality. By surrendering to what is in each moment, you will discover the boundless Freedom, Fullness and Faith that is the foundation of a truly awakened life.

In this retreat, we will guide you through a series of inner postures and practices to break free from our attachment to knowing and plunge directly into the essential mystery at the heart of reality itself. By giving up any investment in the mind’s power to know, we will discover the primordial innocence of our own true nature, which paradoxically opens the door to an infinite source of wisdom.

    3. Opening to the Mystery of Awareness

Awareness is perhaps the most irreducible and mysterious fact of human existence. In every moment of our waking life, we are aware. We are conscious. Yet, because of our habitual focus on the “content” of awareness the thoughts, feelings and sensations that arise from moment to moment–most of us live our entire lives without ever becoming aware of awareness itself. At the heart of spiritual awakening is the unexpected and always arresting recognition of awareness itself, prior to everything. When we learn how to shift our attention from its habitual fixation on “objects” to the limitless awareness in which all objects arise, we discover that we have always already been free. We come home to the Source. In this retreat, we will engage in a series of inner postures and practices designed to reveal Awareness to itself. By becoming aware of awareness and learning how to rest in the natural recognition of awareness itself, you will come face to face with mystery of who you are prior to being aware of anything.

    4. Opening to the Mystery of Timelessness: A Journey into the Freedom of Not Waiting for a Better Future

In this retreat, we will guide you through a set of subtle yet accessible inner postures and practices to step out of this paradigm of postponement and embrace the wholeness and mystery of who and what you already are right now. By giving up any and all investment in a more enlightened future, you will find yourself with no choice but to embrace the fullness and wholeness that has always been the very essence of your own being.

    5. Opening to the Mystery of Oneness

In this retreat, we will practice a series of inner postures that will enable you to step out of the habit of imposing separation and directly into the realization of oneness or nonduality. By allowing any sense of separation or boundary to dissolve, you will find yourself released into the profound and liberating recognition that there is no other.

    6. Opening to the Mystery of Freedom: The Liberating Power of Surrender

Ultimately spiritual awakening is about learning how to let go of control so that a greater power, wisdom and care can begin to move through us and as us. To allow the profound consciousness that is our True Nature to begin to manifest in our life, we have to get out of the way. This requires us to take the greatest leap we have ever taken–to Trust in something we cannot see and that our mind will never be able to comprehend. In our final retreat of the year, we will guide you through a series of inner postures and practices to let go of any attempt to control reality. By surrendering to what is in each moment, you will discover the boundless Freedom, Fullness and Faith that is the foundation of a truly awakened life.

Our Most Frequently Asked Question

“I already know that I will not be able to attend all of the retreats live.
Should I do the program anyway?”

As with any structured course or program, it’s inevitable that most of us will need to miss a session from time to time. In some cases, we may already know that we’ll need to miss several sessions. It’s natural to feel concerned that missing live sessions will detract from our experience of the program.

It’s for this reason that we’ve designed this program to be accessed in two entirely different–but equally powerful–ways.

Obviously the first way to participate is through live attendance at our virtual events.

The second way is through participation by accessing the recordings and transcripts at a time that works for you.

Because we’re well aware that very few participants are able to attend every session live, we’ve intentionally designed the program to be equally powerful even if you were to do all of the retreats from audio recordings rather than listening to them live as they happen.

By the morning after any of our retreats you will have an audio recording of the entire event available to listen to. Of course if you listen live you have the opportunity to engage with us directly, but honestly many people have reported that they find doing the retreats from the audio recordings just as powerful as attending live.

In addition, within a week after any retreat the audio of the entire event will be edited into segments and posted in our online portal along with typed transcripts of all of the sessions. Many people find this audio format valuable because it allows for more convenient listening and referencing. The transcripts allow you to highlight particularly impactful insights that you can refer to quickly later.

And of course you will also receive the weekly study guides with specifically chosen teachings along with written explanations of the point being presented and questions designed to guide you in contemplation.

We encourage you to attend as many of the retreats live as you can. At the same time we firmly believe that this program is structured to be equally impactful even if you can’t.

What last year’s participants
have to say about their experience…

I’ve been pursuing spiritual growth for over 2 decades. I’ve learned from a number of spiritual teachers, philosophies, readings and experiences, but the directness of this approach to my true nature is unprecedented, immediate, powerful, and life changing.

S. Zahran | Sao Paulo, Brazil

I discovered that underneath my thinking there is a vast ocean of stillness. At times I found myself falling into a depth between the words being spoken.

V. Thomas| Montreal, Canada

Through this program I experienced the space of no space and the truth of being one with all forms arising in the divine mystery of life.

H. Wong| Boise, Idaho

I feel free and transformed. I am finally able to live my life to the fullest in the moment.

A. Dock | Taby, Sweden

This program has made me more aware of how I can free myself from limiting thoughts so I can become the limitless being that I essentially am. I loved working with all the different postures and finding out where they would bring me, making my meditation so much more powerful!

P. Gort| Sydney, Australia

The depth of wordless, unlimited, indescribable, free space of meditation is now familiar to me and more easily reached.

S. Curry | Tarrytown, New York

Before this program, I knew I needed to initiate a transition in my life. This program has been instrumental in giving me the inspiration to initiate that transition and the structure to keep taking steps toward it rather than waiting for a magical moment.

R.Mickler | Marshall, Illinois

This class has been life transforming because I now know my true self at a much deeper level. I look forward to continuing and deepening my daily practice.

C. Spencer| Chula Vista, California

Attending the Retreats, Activation Sessions, Awakening Discussion Group and meeting weekly with my Practice Partner, has not only transformed my meditation practice, it has transformed my life so that I display a self that I never imagined would appear.

R. Smith | Pukalani, Hawaii

Jeff and Craig are a truly marvellous combination! They combine fierce committment with such loving kindness and their trust in and respect for each other supports the depth and clarity of their teaching. They are both very illuminating teachers. Participating in this course has been a yearlong immersion in an awakened field, which, although subtle, has had a profound impact on my meditation practice and my spiritual life.

C. Harper | West Sussex, UK

I am deeply grateful for the unveiling of the truth of who and what I am; Awareness; Love; the Source of happiness.

M. McPherson | Victoria BC

I am so grateful for this program – it helped me deepen my meditation practice, and the teaching of the postures broadened and deepened my understanding of what it means to be in conscious awareness. I can’t recommend this program enough. Craig and Jeff are masters of teaching and transmission.

S.Benson | New York, New York

As a result of the guidance and encouragement I received in this program, my meditation practice has deepened and my relationship to literally everything is shifting.

This program has helped my meditation practice to be deeper and more consistent. I notice more equanimity during daily challenges. The practices integrate knowledge I have gleaned from decades of spiritual seeking throughout the world.

M. Sapsford| Toronto, Canada

The Opening to the Infinite Program has deepened my experience and understanding of Enlightenment. The direct experience of the Divine has infused my daily living and strengthens my resolve to play my role as a servant of evolution.

M. Shelton | Maroochydore, Australia

I am experiencing a growing confidence in myself and life; the eight inner postures have illuminated a whole new world of awareness. Jeff and Craig have transformed my preconceptions about meditation and opened me to an ever-expanding experience of Spirit.

D. Powell | Toronto, Canada

The ability to dive deep into specific teachings as a group during virtual retreats (which I honestly was dubious of at the beginning, but easily found myself 100% committed to!) and then have support of weekly reminders deepened my practice immensely!

S. Miller| Denver, Colorado

At age 71 I have devoted most of my life to spiritual pursuits and I found this approach to be the most true in every sense because it is only about being in direct contact with consciousness. It is a gratifying discovery as a culmination of my life so far.

B. Vetter | Vancouver, Canada

Through this program I found a renewed awareness and trust that spiritual awakening is available to us all. That it’s right here – ongoingly present. I felt great joy knowing that there were so many others joining on this path together.

K. Reeder | Boston, Massachusetts

I found more permanent access to non-conceptual awareness and an awakened field of ever-presence. Craig and Jeff both resonate a palpable depth of realization and clearly guide from that awakening space.

S. Frost | New York, New York.

I grew so much this year. I had hoped that I would, but I never would have imagined that I could move so far from where I was to where I am now in just one year. But I did thanks to the energy, teamwork and techniques Craig and Jeff brought to the program as well as the contributions from the whole class.

Weekly Study Guides

Each of our retreats and workshops will give you a tremendous amount of new insight and understanding to work with. To support this process of integration you will receive one study guide during each week of the program.

Each guide will be centered around an edited segment taken from our most recent retreat or workshop. These segments will highlight key insights and perspectives so that you can absorb them completely. The study guides can be used for individual contemplation and growth or as discussion topics for those who choose to work with a practice partner or study group.

Each Study Guide Includes:

The Inner Postures of Awakened Awareness

— An Eight Part Digital Course

As a member of Opening to the Infinite, you’ll have exclusive access to ‘The Eight Inner Postures of Awakened Awareness’ digital course.

To create this course-within-a-course, we’ve compiled the most powerful teachings from our 2016 Opening to the Infinite program into sixteen audio sessions arranged in eight learning modules.

Each module focuses on one of the Inner Postures of Awakened Awareness (described earlier on this page) and contains a recorded teaching and guided meditation from Craig Hamilton and another from Jeff Carreira, each offering a unique perspective on the transformational power of the posture.

Study guides accompany each of the audio recordings summarizing the main points of the the teaching and offering questions to guide your contemplation and practice.

This special digital course is available exclusively to members of the Opening to the Infinite community and is offered as a powerful tool of support for our year-long journey.

In this course, you will discover that these inner postures are not techniques designed to bring about a future moment of awakening.

Practice Partnerships and Groups

As an optional part of the program, you’ll be provided with a structure for finding and engaging with evolutionary partners on the path, either in dyads, triads or small groups.

A significant dimension of our transformational work is experienced through engagement with others in the community. Practice partnerships and practice groups provide invaluable context for collective practice and evolutionary support.

Practice partners meet together by phone regularly to discuss the progress of their practice and support each other to remain inspired and focused.

Practice groups generally meet to work with the material provided in the study guides. Group engagement with the study guide material is an invaluable way to deepen as quickly as possible into the delicate territory you will be exploring.

Private Online Course Portal

Simply having a way to connect with peers who share your values, aspirations, and spiritual context can make all the difference in the quality of your practice. It can provide a tremendous sense of support, motivation, and focus.

During the duration of the program you will have access to a private course portal containing all of the course materials. That means all of the schedules, audio archives, study guides and instructions will be easily accessible in one convenient online location.

In addition the course portal provides a forum for commenting on the course material and engaging in conversation with other Opening to the Infinite members.

Whether you participate frequently, or touch base every so often, as a member of Opening to the Infinite you’ll get continuous access to a friendly and flexible online community—and the wisdom and understanding that only a community of fellow practitioners can offer.

You’ll be able to:

  • Engage in ongoing shared inquiry and discussion of the program teachings and practices
  • Expand your network of evolutionary friends, leaders and practitioners
  • Share your own questions, projects and ideas with a community of peers

A yearlong Journey of Awakening

You’re invited to join us for an entire year devoted to sustaining awakened awareness. We’re thrilled to be teaching together once again and to bring everything we’ve learned in our many decades of spiritual practice and teaching work to support you in achieving a stable, sustained awakening.

In this program we will:
  • …have our own true nature repeatedly activated and revealed to us.
  • …immerse in illuminated mind together and explore it from the inside out.
  • …continually reinforce and practice essential inner postures that enlighten our hearts and minds.
  • …build a powerfully transformative spiritual momentum by engaging with key pillars of profound practice.
  • …work together as a sangha in spiritual solidarity and shared commitment, always ready to take our awakening to new levels.
  • …build a deep understanding of the awakening process so that our practice outside of the retreat environment will be strong and fruitful.

Join us for a Radical Leap
into Liberated Consciousness

If you’ve read through this page you are familiar with all the pieces of the program we’re offering, but we want to be sure that our underlying intention is clear. You see, we’ve been serious spiritual practitioners for decades and spent many of those years doing spiritual work together.

We have each experienced profound spiritual openings and more importantly we know what it feels like to live inside of an awakened field of awareness and have your own growth and evolution supported by that field. We want to create that opportunity together with you. That is ultimately why we are so deeply committed to working with a group of sincere practitioners in a sustained field of awakened consciousness.

To be clear, we are not trying to construct a complete spiritual path for everyone. There are no one-size-fits-all solutions here. We recognize that each of us has a unique path and we are all in different places with different developmental needs at any given moment.

In this program, we are focusing specifically on establishing and sustaining a field of illuminated consciousness among a significant group of people to support the individual growth and fulfillment of everyone involved AND to expand that possibility in the world.

This program does not include explicit emphasis on shadow work, self-purification, or psychological and emotional processing. We know these forms of work each have their place in the developmental trajectory of a human life. We engage in them personally with the support of our own mentors and peers, and we provide this kind of support to others in different forums. We highly recommend that you pursue qualified training and support in these areas as well.

Our experience tells us that the most powerful foundation for any developmental work is being rooted in a direct experience of awakened consciousness and connected in an ongoing way with people who share our passion for awakening.

That’s why we want to provide this opportunity for you to focus exclusively on the four essential elements that we feel have the greatest impact on our ability to sustain liberated consciousness: Spiritual Activation, Spiritual Immersion, Mastering the Inner Postures of Awakened Consciousness and Cultivating the Pillars of Profound Spiritual Practice.

We are both brimming with excitement to see where we can all go together and what heights we can reach as fellow travelers on the path.

We look forward to embarking on this journey with you.

Sincerely,

Jeff Carreira & Craig Hamilton

Special Early Registration Offer

Register by February 24th and participate in two additional Live Bonus Workshops with Craig and Jeff!

We’re committed to doing everything we can to support the continued growth of your practice between now and the start of this year’s program on April 22nd.

So, if you register before our Early Registration Deadline on February 24th you’ll have an opportunity to participate in two special live pre-course workshops exploring two of the biggest pitfalls facing any spiritual practitioner: Spiritual Bypassing and Spiritual Materialism.

Even for those of us who are very advanced in our spiritual practice, these two tendencies tend to reappear in ever more subtle forms, derailing our practice and obscuring the purity of our awakening.

So we’ve designed two workshops that will give all of us a deep understanding of what these pitfalls are and how to avoid them.

Live Bonus Workshop 1

Beyond Spiritual Bypassing

25th February | 9-11am Pacific (12-2 Eastern)

One of the most common–and insidious–pitfalls on the spiritual path is what is often referred to as “spiritual bypassing”–the tendency to use spiritual practice as a way to escape from the pain and complexity of life. Nearly all of us, in one way or another, look to our spiritual path for solace and shelter from the storms and struggles life brings our way. Genuine spiritual practice is designed to free us from the knot of self-created psychological and emotional suffering at the center of the “false self.” But to truly advance on the spiritual path requires us to leave all avoidance and escapism behind so that we can cultivate a fearless embrace of reality as it is. In this workshop, you will explore the subtle ways that we all attempt to avoid uncomfortable aspects of life and learn how to find the strength and clarity to wholeheartedly embrace all of life.

Live Bonus Workshop 2

Transcending Spiritual Materialism

March 18th | 9-11am Pacific (12-2 pm Eastern)

Most of us enter onto the spiritual path because we want something from it. Whether we long for inner peace, freedom from our mind, or a permanent state of happiness, nearly all of us come to spiritual practice with a subtle, often unconscious goal of acquiring something permanent that we can hold on to. The late Buddhist teacher Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche coined the term “Spiritual Materialism” to refer to this widespread tendency to grasp onto the fruits of awakening as though they were possessions we could obtain. The path of genuine awakening requires us to learn how to be “empty handed,” ultimately holding on to nothing. Only in the radical relinquishment of the need to have or get anything for ourselves, can we discover and finally embrace the inherent fullness of reality as it is. In this workshop, we will explore how deeply conditioned our need to accumulate is and discover how to relinquish this subtle materialism, opening the door to an unimaginable freedom from the need to have or hold on to anything.

An Unshakable Foundation for Awakening

A 3-Part Audio Workshop Series

When you register by March 23, in addition to all of the elements listed above, you will also receive access to this three part audio series. These three 2-hour workshops address crucial aspects of what creates the inner strength and fortitude that allows us to attain awakened consciousness. These workshops provide the perfect preparation for the Opening to the Infinite program.

— WORKSHOP 1:

Completing with the Past

Any authentic journey of awakening requires us to let go of our past. To step into the timeless freedom and wholeness that is our own essential nature, we must be willing to leave behind all of the ideas, beliefs, stories and habits we’ve accumulated over a lifetime–or perhaps even many lifetimes.

But how do we truly let go of the past without abandoning hard won wisdom or devaluing the genuine growth we’ve gained through our previous experiences?

In this 2-hour workshop, we will begin preparing the ground for our year-long journey by engaging a process of completion that enables us to draw strength and inspiration from the life we’ve lived up to this point and to release any unwanted baggage we’re carrying in order to make room for that which is truly new to emerge.

— WORKSHOP 2:

Opening to Ultimate Possibility

Spiritual awakening opens the door to a truly unimaginable possibility. The potential of living a deeply awakened life is so magnificent and so far beyond most of what we see in the world that even when we taste it for ourselves, we often find it hard to accept that life could be this extraordinary.

In order to make room in ourselves for the miraculous to take root, most of us need to uncover, examine and ultimately leave behind a deeply rooted fundamental insistence on a life of limitation.

In this second workshop in our series, we will guide you through a process of identifying and uprooting the most insidious obstacle to awakening–our “existential doubt” that true awakening is really possible.

This deeply rooted and often unconscious cultural cynicism infects even the most dedicated spiritual seekers and subtly holds us back from taking the leap of trust required to embrace the inherent perfection of our true nature.

Through a series of guided exercises, we will support you in letting go of all imposed doubt and limitation and stepping into a consciousness of unlimited possibility.

In this radical freedom from limitation, you will experience firsthand why this “possibility consciousness” is not only a powerful doorway to awakening, but one of the essential qualities of spiritual liberation itself.

— Workshop 3:

Establishing An Unwavering Intention

This final workshop in our series will guide you in cultivating the single most important quality you can bring to the spiritual path–a clear and unwavering intention.

When we think about setting an intention, we often tend to associate it with goal-setting and the exercise of will toward the achievement of specific outcomes.

But intention is not merely a matter of willpower. Intentions are like seeds that we plant deep in our consciousness that will come to fruition as long as we create the proper environment for their growth.

A foundation free of limiting beliefs and rooted in a direct experience of ultimate reality is the ground within which true intention for awakening can be set.

In this session, you will learn how to plant an intention that is much more than just an imagined future goal for you to strive toward. The intention that you set in this workshop will be an anchor that connects you directly to the living reality of your own potential for a truly awakened life.

Our goal is to anchor you in a living relationship with your intention to awaken that puts you in an ongoing direct connection with your deepest vision of the ultimate possibility.
